I love having the opportunity over the summer break to dip into some interesting books, so in keeping with arcinvest’s focus, here’s my top 5 summer investment books.
These are light and entertaining, easy reading on investment. Books that are great for the beach, the endless distraction of children, scenery and checking the cricket score…
The Barefoot Investor
by Scott Pape
I’ll be giving a couple of my adult nieces this book for Christmas. It’s a great gift idea for young adults or anyone wanting or needing to think about their spending and saving, getting a basic budget together and starting to develop a financial plan. It has good, simple, solid advice with an interesting approach like using a special date night to discuss finances.
25 years of Whitt & Wisdom
by Noel Whittaker
A collection of financial planning guru Noel Whittaker’s weekly newspaper articles from the past 25 years. An easy read that you can dip in and out of. The sections are suitable to read non-sequentially and choose articles on similar themes that interest you. This book is full of common sense (or sense that should be more common) articles.
Uncommon sense: Investment Wisdom since the Stock Markets Dawn
by Michael Kemp
This book talks about the development of financial markets and how various ways of thinking about investment evolved along with the financial development of markets. It also provides reasons for what works and what doesn’t work when investing in the stock market. This book will get you questioning, if you don’t already have a healthy level of scepticism about the right way to invest.
The Value Investors – Lessons from the World’s Top Fund Managers
by Ronald W. Chan
Ronald W. Chan interviewed 12 value-investing legends from around the world, learning how their life experiences have shaped their investment mindset and strategy. The book details how these investors, each of whom has a unique value perspective, have consistently beaten the stock market over the years.
The Essays of Warren Buffett: Lessons for Investors and Managers
by Lawrence A. Cunningham
A collection of wisdom from Warren Buffett’s letters to the shareholders of his company, Berkshire Hathaway Inc., who have gained an enormously valuable informal education. The letters distil, in plain words, all the basic principles of sound business practices. I have not read this book however I have read nearly all of Warren’s letters to the shareholders and found them highly informative with wonderful pearls of wisdom contained within.
My Top 5 books every investor should read would be a different list and much more heavy going. Stay tuned for that list.
Happy summer and happy reading!
